<apologies in advance for rambling>
For those of you that have been around a while, you are familiar with bluelady 's Charles. If you are new here, you are in for a treat when you get to that bait. Anyway everything is starting to go Charles way (again), he is elated and excited about a parcel he has being delivered on Tuesday. He will sit home all day on Tuesday patiently waiting for a parcel that contains a prepaid debit card loaded with 500.00...a parcel that will never come. I have a smile on my face and honestly a certain warmth in my heart thinking about what this man will endure emotionally on Tuesday, and Wednesday when delivery is attempted again, and Thursday.....I am excited about the emotional roller coaster ride this man is about to get on....and part of me is disgusted with myself. However.....
We all have our stories of what led us to scambaiting. My journey brought me to this community as many of you know I was trying to get a friend who was a victim some help. I must admit that the thought of Charles being excited about his delivery on Tuesday only to be let down they will try again on Wednesday.....oh to be a fly on the wall. It is a good feeling.
I experienced the excitement first hand the excitement of a scam victim waiting all day for DHL to deliver his consignment, he would not leave his apartment. Tried to get him to go out to lunch, (he had no food in the house) but refused to leave. He was so excited that his consignment was coming and he could not wait to prove me wrong. I went and got us lunch and sat with him for a few more hours. He called me later that night begging me for gas money. You see the scammers contacted him later that day and said they were detained at an airport by customs and needed another $1500.00 to clear customs. The airport they gave him was a small municipal airport about six hours away. He sent them the 1500.00 leaving him with about 40 bucks to his name, and told them to hold it at the airport he was coming to get it. Then he realized he had no money for gas (or food, or utilities, or rent). Well I contacted the FBO and the manager called my friend and told him not only did they not have customs at that airport, there was no parcel there in his name nor was there anyone detained there. Not satisfied with that he called the local Sheriff (yes this was a small airport in the middle of nowhere) and the Sheriff told him the same thing. He contacted the scammers (not believing what I, the FBO and the Sheriff told him) and told them he could not make the drive and to go ahead and deliver it. Of course this was going to cost more money, the 1500.00 only covered the clearance, not the additional security and delivery fees, I of course refused to give him any money. I don't remember if he managed to borrow it from someone else or just waited until he got his next SSI check...but he opted to send them more money. Ended up further behind on his rent and utilities, and was ultimately evicted from his apartment. Charles is about to experience albeit to a far lesser degree, the emotional turmoil of very people he and his kind victimize.
So had I never experienced a scam from the perspective of watching a friend be victimized, and never seen first hand what these scammers do to victims, I would truly be disgusted by my feelings toward what Charles is about to go through. Having experienced first hand the very emotional roller coaster (to a far greater degree) that Charles is about to once again endure through the eyes of a victim advocate....I wish I could give Charles a lifetime pass to ride that same roller coaster over and over again with no way to escape.
I am pissed at myself for enjoying watching Charles suffer....and I am OK with that.
