Why scammers in Africa experience troubles having these documents? Especially international passport.

International passports cost money and are relatively expensive. Especially for those who don't plan to travel abroad it would seem like a waste of money to have one. I don't know about other African countries, but I know that Nigeria has a system now where citizens can apply for a national identification document. Many applied and got a temporary document, but not the final ID card yet. It seems to take a lot of time, but considering the large population and the government that seems to tend to the rich mostly, it's no surprise that it takes a lot of time for the common people to get things done. Maybe Captain Nigeria can say a bit more about this.

Well I always had an international passport regardless if I will travel or not. It is a thing cause you never know... How much does it cost in Africa? International biometric documents are given for 10 years and I think once in 10 years they can give out 10-20 dollars As about id cards - in classic countries you get it in 10-20 days, if you are already a citizen

The way things go in Africa can not be compared to how things go in Europe, America, Australia, etc. For us, the cost of a passport seems reasonable because it takes years to expire and good to have just in case. For many Africans it is simply too expensive. I can imagine that the Africans who are well off might have an international passport, but if you have to choose between a meal for your family for several days or a passport that you might not even use, it's not that hard to make a choice.

Well basically the service fee of international passport is plausible cause the production and the work biometric database is thing that needs a lot of resources (special paper, DB, staff, checking via interpol/internal investigation cases for that person). ID is other story - some countries don't even issue it, some countries issue both ID and internal "paper" passport. And as scammers earn a lot of money I don't understand why they live without documents...

Because they don't plan to travel, but that new Iphone / nike air sneakers / ... are very tempting. Or they have to pay off student loans, pay rent, hospital bills. Life in Africa is very different from what we are used to. If you don't plan to use an international passport, then why pay for one if you need the money for more important things. And not all scammers earn a lot of money. Some do, but others just try but never get anything.

chuckbutt . I totally agree with linoline. Passports cost about 50% of what more than majority makes in a year, and the process is very difficult. There is also an official price, and actual price (which includes [necessary] bribes). The whole system is plagued with issues, and recently, they said they ran out of paper. I think this went on for months and they didn't issue passports to people. thenationonlineng.net/fg-immigration-tackle-passport-scarcity/There's also more articles online. I think you can also familiarize yourself with the concept of Passport strength/Passport index. Because Nigeria is a high immigration risk country, it is difficult for most Nigerians to do international travel, even within Africa. They have to prove you have certain things back home like a good job, family, land/money, etc. More established scammers (like the bosses) definitely have passports, for trips to Ghana or holidays to Dubai.

That’s very interesting.
So, many Nigerian citizens only have temporary identity documents (without a picture) ?

Thanks for such detailed view on situation. It is embarrassing that the embassy leaves its citizens in the middle of nobody being as their passports expire. In some countries this may cause fines or even deportation. In usual countries you just go to the institution which provides you passport and apply for it. If you go to embassy you have to wait bit longer but that's okay. I wonder how our guys travel to Benin without biometric ECOWAS passport? Are they allowed to travel via internal Nigerian passport / ID? Consolidated 2 Posts into one. chuckbutt , please, don't double-post. Mr P :-)

I thought they bribed the border guards to let them through without ID? Or would this not be possible?

A Ghanaian Lad who had a pleasant stay in Benin (from my POV, anyway) told me that he'd paid a bribe to get across the border.

I thought they bribed the border guards to let them through without ID? Or would this not be possible? I don't believe they let you in without documentation. Imagine something happens to that lad in Ghana. If he dies or gets hospitalized that's a big issue and scandal. A Ghanaian Lad who had a pleasant stay in Benin (from my POV, anyway) told me that he'd paid a bribe to get across the border.
Omg... What happens if the guy dies? How will he be identified if he has no documents? How will his body be repatriated? Or if he commits a crime, how will Benin know who is he? Upd: he tells this about covid. He didn't say he had no documents.

I merged your two posts. Please read the rules on double postingAgain... it's Africa. The countries you mention have so much corruption that you can get really far with bribes. The border guards probably will not care much about those what ifs. They get the bribe money and will have some more to feed their family. You can believe that they won't let you in without documentation, but that doesn't change the fact that they do if you pay enough.

Border security police gets good money, as far as I know. In each County it is special unit of CIA/MI/BND/SSA or similar. Maybe in Ghana not.
