Some of you may know of Vocal Slender (aka Eric Obuh) who came to modest fame after appearing in the 2010 BBC TV mini-series ‘Welcome to Lagos’. I sometimes play his excellent song 'Nigeria' at the start of Live Streams. Back in 2010, Eric was working on the Olusosun rubbish dump in Lagos as a Scavenger, labouring hard to finance his dream to become a professional rapper and singer. Eric claimed to be a Christian and often mentioned God.
One evening in a beer parlour, Eric and his friends fought with another Scavenger called Kazeem and blinded him. In Nigeria, this is almost a death sentence for a man, who will never work again and perhaps, never eat. Eric was prosecuted and only escaped prison because his fellow Scavengers raised a large sum of money to pay off Kazeem's family as compensation.
Anyway, Eric soon felt forced off the dump by other Scavengers who disliked him. He returned to the Lagos ghetto of Ajegunle, where he formed a charity - the Ajegunle Project - which helps poor people there.
As you'll all know, most of my Team Members are Nigerian (Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba), frustrated with the activities of the 419 Scammers in their country. Most of the 419 Scammers who contact me are Nigerian. At ScamBait Central, we try our best to show the truth, that almost all Nigerians are honest, kind, hard-working people, and that the 419 Scammers from there are a miniscule minority.
For some time, I have been looking for a suitable charity in Nigeria for ScamBait Central to officially sponsor and raise money for. I have in mind the occasional special Live Stream where all donations will be passed to the Charity in question. One of my team members at ScamBait Central, Mr Ayodeji (like Eric, a Yoruba man) has suggested some charities in his country, which I have been considering.
In March 2021, I tried to contact Eric Obuh about the Ajegunle Project. I wanted to support the charity via SBC and raise funds for it. Contacting Eric was quite difficult as his website had been closed and his email address rejected mail. I found one of his contacts and supporters and emailed her, proposing to support the Ajegunle Project. She did not reply. I then commented under one of her YouTube uploads. She replied initially but then, resounding silence. I emailed Eric at another address. He did not reply. I also PMd him via FaceBook. He read my PM and ignored it. Astonished and disappointed, I left it at that.
Yesterday, after 15 months of silence, Eric replied to my FaceBook PM. He had just seen my latest Post on the SBC FaceBook Page, publicising this Thread at SF: scambaitingforum.com/thread/1603/chuck-nigerian-romance-scammer As you’ll see, he describes us scambaiters as ‘evil’.
Eric, I respected you as someone who had striven to rise above the daily grind in Lagos and make something of your life, later founding a truly commendable charity to help poor people. I tried my best to begin to support your work there.
I now know why you ignored my proposal to raise funds for your charity. You have made it abundantly clear in the abusive PM you sent me, attacking us here that you support these vermin 419 Scammers who steal from innocent people both in the West and in your own country, who wreck peoples’ lives, bankrupt them, and drive some to suicide.
Shame on you, Vocal Slender.
