I've been messing with a scammer, Brian Thomas, for most of today. We discussed wiring Western Union money to him in someplace in Nigeria. I wrote back to him:
Good. I'll do the transaction and update you in a few hours.

I was planning to forge a receipt and blame any issues on him as usual. Suddenly, he announced a change of accounts to send the money to. He wrote:
Alex, send here instead:
<snipped, we don't post mule information - Linoline>
Once you send it send me the payment slip shoes that you have send it
I responded later:
Sorry, I just got back home. Before I send the payment slip, would you mind telling me who <mule> is?

As you can tell, it was a casual question. I've asked scammers about in-congruent names of bank accounts before, and have been amused by their lies to cover up the discrepancies. But the answer I received from Brian was bizarre and a little unnerving:
I don't no him I haven't meet him before send me the payment slip now Swear by my family I don't no him I never meet him Send me the payment slip and stop asking me the question never ask it agian
This startled me, and I wrote back:
Wait just a second. I made the payment, and I'm going to send you the slip soon. But this is confusing. What are you doing making a payment via a bank account belonging to someone you don't even know?!

Maybe I've burned him a little, but I'm confused by this sudden turn of events. As stated in the title of my post, it seems like this "<snipped>" may be a mule. If so, how do we/I help them? If "<snipped>" is not a mule, what could be going on here?
