The Lovely Sergeant is a non-fiction book by Anthony Burgess that tells the true story of Flora Sandes, an English girl who served as a nurse in the Serbian Army during the Great War. It has nothing to do with what follows, except to explain the title of this thread.
I've twice baited a scammer who claimed to be a US Army sergeant on duty in Syria. Both had the same opening script, but the most recent one went down another path (I'll post the earlier bait at some point). As usual, the scammer's name has been changed, and his emails are date-stamped; my comments are in bold.

Camp Stanley is one of the military bases run by the United States of America in Syria. It is located close to Damascus and is considered to be the largest part of the Red Cloud Garrison. It is located relatively close to the DMZ ( Damascus Syria Zone) and aims to ensure the peace in the area. The history of this military base is not very rich, although old enough. I must thank you for your response once again as this shows your interest and I appreciate that.
In the past years there has been severe Wars/rainfall that caused deadly flooding and damage to Syria. Some wealthy people including politicians were killed and their houses and companies were destroyed as a result of the severe floods/War. Majority of them lost their entire family as a result of this and a great sum of United States currencies were realized by the Government in their business structures, houses was destroyed but mostly companies.
During a routine patrol by my unit sometime ago, some of us discovered a huge safe buried in a destroyed building. Most of the soldiers in my unit were not aware of this as we kept it secret till we had time to personally inspect the safe and found out it contained the sum of $35 Million. This politicians understood the laws against such amount of currency in the country so I believed they buried it and secretly used it for their political mischief. Three of us who found it decided to split it amongst ourselves and at the moment, I have my share of $10 Million privately secured and safe in two trunk boxes without the awareness of anyone but I cannot continue to hold it back here for long because of my active duty. So i will advice you due to the urgency, to get back to immediately with your contact information's, to enable us open communication with the diplomat.
Meanwhile I am so sorry to encroach into your privacy in this manner but I got your email address from an address journal and I found it pleasurable to contact you On the Web for help. I decided to break cover and reveal Mal's military background early. It's a gamble, I admit, but the scammer may think it makes Mal sympathetic to another soldier.
GROPO is a slightly derisive term for infantry soldiers; it's actually Royal Marines slang, not US, but hey.

The scammer isn't even slightly fazed by Mal's revelation. He sends five photos of an attractive woman in uniform and in civvies, but not the promised photograph of the money.
The details of the shuttle flights will mean more questions, of course.

But to matters of moment; I'm no longer living in the US. I moved to Australia in late 2006 and I've lived there ever since. Given that I'm on the far side of the world from Spain, Turkey or Amsterdam, travelling to any of those places would be a bit of a stretch, especially since my work contracts are pretty much iron-clad and with spring setting in, and after two years of isolation, things are getting busy. So is travelling to any of those countries still required?
