Other than the fact that they're out there to begin with, what are some of the scariest looking scams that you think are truly successful?
Just a few that I worry about are Fake Puppies, Romance, fake online rentals.

Not necessarily AFF, but apart from those mentioned above some phising scams are something I worry about. They're getting increasingly realistic over time.
For instance tax refund scam emails and SMS are something I remember elder family members about when it's that time of the year. It's not too hard for anyone in moderate need/unaware to suffer identity theft, online banking credentials and account/cc details.
The ones I find most infuriating are those targeting elderly people and taking advantage of their softest and weakest side, for instance granchild in jail scams.

I think the romance scams are the cruelest. Not only do they cost people a lot of money, they also cost the victims their hearts. A very sad one on uk radio this week about an old lady who continued to send money even when her family explained the situation.

Romance Scams are ever-increasing as more of us look for love online. These scams are particularly nasty, since they mess with the emotions.

I agree, romance scams are the worst cos victims invest not just their money. My brother (didn't know I baited) told me a couple of years ago about a Russian beauty who was coming over to see him after a whirlwind online romance. I asked him a few questions e.g. have you video called? Have you sent money? Who is paying for the flight etc. He was adamant they were not scamming him. I will never forget the look of realisation on his face when I convinced him. Very sad.

In 2019 Americans lost a smudge over 475 million dollars to romance scams, making it the second most "popular" scam ranked by victim loss. Advanced fee fraud came in 12th with 100 million lost, for reference. pdf.ic3.gov/2019_IC3Report.pdfNot only are these losses massive, but worryingly many money mules are also "hired" via this type of scam and become unwitting money launderers. That's really the bit that concerns me, as these mules play a vital part in all cyber-fraud. And, when these mules are "burnt", the real scammers hide safely away while the victim gets the most of the legal repercussions. That being said, if it's guilt and playing with emotions you're after, puppy scams rank pretty high on that list too. In a particularly cruel twist, these scammers often threaten their victims with 'animal abandonment' if they begin to get suspicious after a first payment, to keep them paying for extra costs, like fancy pet crates for shipping. All too many times I hear of reports from victims who are guilted out by the tiniest of chances the pet they bought might just be real. After all, who could bear to see a cute puppy all alone in an airport?

Have anybody ever looked into the ''cfd'' scam ?? most people never even realised that they have been scammed . I refer to these ''fake" ofshore unregulated contract for difference (dealing in Stocks and bonds and forex) That take your moneey and you never hear from them . the lot that are worsse is those that tell you a ''trading robot" will trade for you and make you rich and then loose all your money -- and then encourage you to ''invest'' more -- from there it is a rinse and dry operation
