My mom spent a couple hours on the phone with a Geek Squad refund scammer this morning. She didn't know her password so she could not install Team Viewer. She thinks she was walked through changing her Apple ID password. She's frazzled and really doesn't know anything now, including her previous or new password. I immediately told her to call Apple so she's doing that. In the meantime, just wondering if someone can tell me what they try to do if you don't know your computer's password to install Team Viewer, so I can get a better sense of how to undo this. How does Apple ID help them?
Thank you!

They will steal her Apple ID account and they are hoping her credit card is connected to it. Any private info as well. Teamviewer when installed generates a password which she would give to scammer and they would connect to her computer. Uninstall it ASAP if you haven't already use an app like Revo Uninstall ( google it, It is free program) it will clean up every file that teamviewer installs that a regular uninstall doesn't remove. AppleID she can try it and do the I forgot password and hope that scammers didn't change her email address that would be registered with the AppleID Hopefully she is safe if they were not able to connect to her computer, with teamviewer they can connect soon as she goes online, so get it off her computer ASAP

Is she using a PC or Mac?
In any case, if she told them a password she not only uses for her Apple-ID but also on other websites, she should change it there, too. Sometimes they like to try stolen Email addresses and passwords on different sites because many people reuse passwords. That way they can do even more damage, e.g. order something from Amazon.

Thanks! Apple helped get the Apple ID and computer password changed pretty quickly and I long ago made sure that all of her other passwords were random and in Apple Keychain so I think we're good but I'll double check that Team Viewer was never installed - I'm pretty sure they didn't get that far though.

There's nothing wrong with TeamViewer. I use it professionally on a regular basis. It only becomes a problem when you autorize someone to take over your PC any time they want. Usually you'd have to give the other person an ID number and a password to be able to connect with your PC. I'd double check anyway if there are any active sessions.
