I've mentioned a few times that the romance scam can lead to the drug mule holiday scam. In this case this woman has fallen into exactly that. I am conflicted. Part of me sees her as a victim. Part of me cannot believe that she was totally unaware of the broad intent. She's an Australian woman called Donna Nelson who's been detained in Japan. Drugs from the scam were in her luggage.
P.S I will also declare my bias. I had two high school friends die from drug overdoses. That leaves me very unsympathetic towards anyone who is running drugs. Even in this case that is not clearcut.

Even though she's making bad choices, we all know that romance scammers are the worst of the worst. The way they manipulate their victims, you just can't imagine. So despite the bad choices she made, in my book she's still a victim and her scammer is the lowest kind of scum who deserves to burn in the hottest part of hell

We all know that romance scammers are the scum of the earth but if you are asked to take luggage belonging to someone else through an international border then the question “did you pack this bag yourself?” must be a warning in itself.

I had told my daughter a few years ago that sometimes people cause their own problems.
I do feel sorry for victims in certain situations but in other situations I don’t feel as sorry and other times I don’t feel sorry at all.
If two people are driving and one is going east to west and the other is going north to south and they come to a four-way stop at the same time and neither one stops and they crash into each other, they are both at fault even if one suffers more physical injuries than the other. They were both in the wrong. This is how I feel about some scam victims. They were in the wrong just as well as the scammer was in the wrong except they suffered more than the scammer.

It's sometimes hard not to shake our heads at some of the actions that victims do. Sending money, borrowing money, letting their children go hungry or homeless, and, yes, even running drugs. There are several good studies on the psychology of a romance victim and can be worth our time to investigate deeper when we find ourselves going "what the hell was she/he thinking?".
Anybody, anywhere can be a victim of fraud and find themselves down a rabbit hole of desperation. That's why we should never blame a victim at SF, but save our hatred and disdain for those who deserve it - scammers.
