Many scammer opening emails, especially those containing a demand for payment, often say something akin to "see if you can afford the payment" when the sum in question is as low as $50.
This one, however, is different; it gives a fairly sizeable sum, and doesn't require immediate payment. But it has some problems of another kind, as you'll see.
The scammer's name has been changed; his emails are date-stamped. My comments are in bold.

Greetings To You,
As an accredited financial consultant to Credit Suisse Canada, I have been given privileged information by the Private Banking
Executive. That information is that one of their bank customers who is currently bedridden wants to give out her wealth to a lucky recipient who must use half of such donation for charity.
The amount of inheritance will be US$5.5Million.The bank has informed me that any of the recipients will have to take care of the legal process by way of paying me to coordinate the release of the US$5.5Million to the lucky beneficiary. I am contacting you to find
out if you can pay my US$5,500 consultation/legal fees.If you can handle it then there is a need for the Private Bank to contact you
immediately for commencement of the process of releasing the inheritance funds to you. For the bank to contact you, urgently
provide your Full names and address including your occupation and age with an ID.Finally, note that all processes will be very transparent and legal as you will see in all the documents. This has absolutely nothing to do with internet scam so With due respect to you, please do not respond to this message if you feel you can not handle the processing of this free will donation. In addition, please do not promise me a percentage or ask me to work on commission.I will not accept it because I need such fee to be used in procuring, updating and swearing big volume of documents both at the bank and courts hence if you can not handle it,you are free to respectfully decline this offer.
Best regards,
John Arthur Milius.

I decided on a non-standard answer.
Mr Milius
Yes, I am able to pay that fee. But I don't like your attitude, sir. It's not your place or right to deny someone who was lucky enough to be granted that money simply because of your sense of entitlement.

He's off script almost immediately.

If you read the first paragraph of my first email you will understand that nobody has been granted the fund. I am the legal consultant who will recommend to the donor a beneficiary who will be granted the fund then the bank will contact such beneficiary as soon as the US$5,500 fee is paid.
My sense of entitlement is not in anyway obstructing my ability to recommend you as the beneficiary because such entitlement is simply required by me to work on your behalf by using the fee to pay all court stamp duty fees, obtain legal and bank documents which will facilitate the release of the US$5.5Million to you.
However if you feel offended by my attitude,I hereby apologise and state that it was never intentional but in your own interest. If you agree to send the fee then forward your full names and address including occupation and age with an ID which is required for processing of the fund release documents.
Best regards,
John Arthur Milius.
I reply with subtle putdowns and a number of TLAs. I might use many more.

TBH, that first paragraph doesn't actually say that no-one has been granted the fund, and nowhere in the message does it say that you're the one who decides who gets the money; rather, that you're the coordinator, no more than that.
WRT your fee, as I said, I'm able to pay it, but it would of course be conditional on my receiving the proper invoicing.

BTW, I'd like to know what happened to make you so touchy on the subject of percentages or commissions.
