Have you ever watched a movie or TV show and thought "That is a good idea and a trick/tactic I should try while scambaiting" or perhaps even something you try because you saw it done in a movie?
I will start.
The MOVIE "Hard Candy" starring Ellen/Elliot Page as a teen girl who poses as a potential victim and meets up with a Pedo IRL. Turns out she's a murder happy vigilante who quickly turns the table and sets about torturing and exposing the person who would of made her a victim. In one part during her reveal she said something to the effect "Don't think I didn't notice how you would go afk for a longer time when I told you about my favorite music band. I hate that band by the way. I knew what you were doing and that you were googling about that band to find out information about them to make it look like you knew all about them and get closer to me." I filled this away for future use and it actually does work. Someone says they like XYZ all you have to do is just google it (or even the city they live in or claim to) and find random information about the item or area and talk loosely/broadly about the subject and you can get most scammers to believe you are more informed about a thing or area than you actually are. Most people don't think you are just going on Google and find out random stuff and just think you actually know it.
One of the Jack Reacher books also helped me. At one point in a dinner he (pretends to) stumble and catch himself on the table where a couple police officers were seated. He glances at their badges and notices their last name. He will then make polite talk and ask them if they served in the military and use their last name as someone he served with. In internal narration he stated a lot of them are former military or had a family member who served and the officer will think that they must look like their cousin/brother etc... more than they do and that's how they know their last name. On the rare chance they don't have a family member in the army/airforce etc... he can just quickly change the subject. (To further give this credence, I've seen videos of kids amazed someone knows their name, forgetting it is on their hat/shirt). This had lead me to look up a scammers FB provided information and I will often drop before they do that I also live in the same city as them. They will see me say first that I live in city XYZ and they will often be surprised as that was also the city they claim to be from. Most people forget/ingnore/don't not remember the information we put out there. In what we put on our facebook profile, what we wear with or names on it etc... and for this it has helped me gain the confidence of a few scammers to get them to believe I lived in their city and instead of doing the gift cards online or other scam instead tell them since we live in the same area we should meet up to do that or me give them what they want. They will actually believe I am in the same fake city as them cause in their mind they randomly mentioned it before they did... but they forget they put it on their profile and a quick glance would provide anyone that information.
