From member sue1950:
A MOST AUDACIOUS SCAM Our monthly parish magazine has a Page from the local police reporting local crimes ( usually the theft of a tractor or sheep dog etc.) and scams people have fallen for but this one was new to me.
An old man received a phone call from the “police” to say his bank a/c was compromised by a scammer. He should take his money out of his bank and a police man would come and collect it for safe keeping. The man was later visited by a fake policeman who collected the cash and was of course never heard of again. The old man lost £17,000.

I think this may be a very old scam from the days before the Internet. I've heard of police directing the victim to withdraw the cash, and detectives would drop by to pick up the money. The money was retained for examination, of course.

I've heard of a variation on this where the victim is induced to help trap the fraud-stars by buying a valuable item ie a Rolex watch which is then collected by either the criminal (the Police will catch him in the act then!) or the Police in order that they can use it to trap the criminal.
It's easy to think that only the very stupid would fall for this sort of crime but the vulnerable people don't always think logically and that's exactly what these scumbags are looking to exploit.

I read through the posts and the post about the police that come to collect the money is very disturbing . What you guys leave out is that the scammer- they 99% depend on the GREED of the mark for sosial engineering to work , I cant get n Rolex for $100 any other place , this is a bargain that im not going to let pass . Two things that makes a scam nearly impossible is A Ask around , family and friends . They should give you logical advise which is in your best interest B Dont be GREEDY - remeber THEY will be EVIL
Think clearly , Why would anybody sell you a rolex for $100 if they can advertise it on Gumtree for $10 000. Even if they are in deep trouble and need the money now . A gumtree ad takes 2 minutes

They depend on the gullibility of the victim, but I don't think victims are necessarily greedy (or even particularly likely to be). If you really believe that you have won the lottery, or that your bank account is compromised, or that you can get something for a lower amount of money than usual, how is it greedy to accept the offer? I think most people would rather buy something cheaply than for a higher cost.
