Our boy has been silent for almost 6 hours.
- It is possible that that telephone conversation (between the taxi driver and the receptionist at the hotel in Bohicon) was the final element that determined Phil to return home. We still don't know what happened to him.
- On the other hand, at one point, in one of his messages, he said he no longer had the "internet" (the data card had probably run out). So it could still be in Benin (although the chances are pretty slim). We will see tomorrow.
If he returned home, then we will try one last safari in Lome.
We can prove with pictures! that Joojoo brought the package back to the warehouse. For a small amount of money, Joojoo could bring the package to Lome. ===

22:53 Phil It's possible that he's home, but google maps tells me it's 6,5 hours and it's been a tight 6 hours since he said he was going home. But maybe he was traveling already.

Well, it looks like our scammer hasn't gone home ... he's afraid the shipping company wants to rob him. Phil is still somewhere in Cotonou, hidden and frustrated. He will probably never forget this wonderful "vacation".

Mal should maybe try to send him some money with Money Gram, using the fake answering machine Maybe that would hold him there some longer.

Mal should maybe try to send him some money with Money Gram, using the fake answering machine.
That had crossed my mind as something to do later; offer him compensation, and then...
But for now; Mal called Mr Phil at about 0130 WAT and got a message in French that the number was unavailable. But Mal's French isn't so good, and he wrote an angry email to The Orphan.
I called Mr Phil, and got some message in French telling me that the number is invalid! What the hell is going on now?

The Orphan's latest email ended up in Spam, so Mal wouldn't have seen it; and since Mal is busy today, and meeting some friends at the pub tonight and then staying over at Beth's, he might not call Mr Phil until quite late, if at all.
19 February 1256 AEST/0256 WAT He has left Cotonu Benin republic back to Ghana without the package. The people refuse to give him the and refused to see him that they were tossing him around. And he is on his way back to his home he said when he comes back he will like to talk with you on the phone. He is very angry with Claude, and Akwode and he is also angry with me on the phone too . That is why I want you to call him talk to him and know how the people treat him bad over there before he left back

It seems unlikely to me that the idiot left for Ghana last night... the local manager Akwode will send some pictures of the package today (brought back to the warehouse by Joojoo), so we will solve the problem of "credibility" in terms of real existence of the package.
If he thinks the package is real, then we have a chance to get it to Lome... next week.

I was wondering if it would be a benefit for this bait and maybe others, if someone with an African accent (Mr Obi? Randy Tom?) called the scammer and played the role required?

tazmanian : Of course, any telephone conversation substantially increases the chances of success of such a story.
09.00 - Joojoo to Phil: If the idiot has already left for Ghana (we don't know yet for sure), then we will try to prove the existence of the package and we will try to "arrange" an "unofficial" delivery in Togo (Lome).

09.24 - Joojoo to Phil, the 2nd message of the day: ===

20 minutes after that call, Mr Phil sent an email detailing his woes, with several large pictures attached.
Potrate photo is the picture I took in the hotel I lodge in when I get to Cotonu. The second photo is the one snap in the front of Cotonu airport restaurant called Makoomba. The rest are my ticket for transportation from Accra Ghana to Cotonu Benin. This to show you that I was really there to take the package for [The Orphan]. Please I want you to call the package back from them if possible because I don't think they are real company. A good night with Beth did not soothe Mal's anger, and it showed...
20 February 1049 AEST/0049 WAT
Your whole attitude was disgraceful. What I heard from you was appalling; a cascade of rude, aggressive, and disrespectful behaviour as you shouted and squealed at me like a spoiled brat having a classic temper tantrum. Your Mr Phil was just as bad, but I'll cut him some slack, given what happened. You don't have that excuse.
I want him to grovel a bit ere things move on.

Post by Yastreb on Feb 20, 2021 9:07:21 GMT
Well, I got my grovel, but The Orphan had to spoil it by claiming that I never allowed him to talk.
20 February 1913 AEST/0913 WAT
Dear sir, I'm sorry if you think disrespect you in all rude way I'm really sorry from my heart forgive as your son and as father always forgive his children. At time when you call me I want to express my feeling to but you will never allow me to talk and explain things to you, I know you are helping sir. But how I wish you let me know before you send this package to me them I would have told you to use FedEx, DHL, or Courrier but you just send it without letting me know to the address I give to if I had know i will not let you use that [TLA] shipping company. Sir please understand me that I'm in a refugee here my way are limited I have to ask someone to help before I can do anything, you send the package to Ghana but it rather gose to different country that dose not understand English Cotonu. I have to beg [Mr Phil] to take time off from his to help me, he accepted has to go for a loan to be able to get transportation hoping when he get there the company will pay for his expenses.but that is not the case He has shown me the photo he snap when get to Cotonu with his ticket money he paid for his transportation but when he get there the people refuse to give his number to him and they were making gose around until he runs out money just imagine someone in a foreign land who doesn't understand French get stranded He was so bitter with me when he managed to get back from Cotonu I was confused too sir, I do not really know what to do sir. Please if they still have the package with them can use FedEx or DHL , Courrier to send it down for me here in Ghana or send it back to you over there in Australia. Please I'm a human just that I was be limited in so many ways I can't go out on my own please find a place in your heart to give me. As for philemon and her wife are still mad at me because of money they borrow to take the Trip to Cotonu, is like yo you are very mad at me and here [Mr Phil] is mad at me. Please I'm confused ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ’”ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ’” crying all day I'm sorry you are my only hope I'm having if you are angry with me then my life here is over.
Mal still can't make sense of what Mr Phil is claiming happened, and he's not happy with that line about never being allowed to explain things, so he'll reply much later.

The scammer is so frustrated:
Of course, Malcolm cannot accept any of the options proposed by the orphan: - repatriation of the package back to Australia, - use of another company (FedEx), because either of the two options involves opening and inventorying the package... the money hidden inside is a BIG problem, with criminal implications ("money laundering" charges) and Malcolm does not want to have problems with the law. Malcolm will tell the orphan that he will try to persuade the shipping company to find a solution to bring the package somewhere closer to Ghana, even if it involves a small additional expense.

|
|
Post by Yastreb on Feb 20, 2021 11:18:01 GMT
I decided that Mal would call The Orphan to spell out the options ahead, and then chewed him out, first for disrespect and then for vacuity and weakness. Maybe Jack Daniels was playing a part in fuelling Mal's bad mood.

I think that if the Lad(s) don't go along with things, when the time comes, Mal will recall the package, and the envelope of cash goes to TLA staff as the price of their silence. Then maybe... * Joojoo either taunts The Orphan about the windfall, or maybe tries to negotiate a sharing formula as a separate branch of the bait. * Mal offers to refund Phil's expenses (details needed in full) and sends it via Moneygram. Any other ideas?

The Orphan has now signalled his intention to do nothing, methinks.
21 February 0204 AEST/20 February 1604 WAT
Just as you said that i should be patient, I will be and wait. Please sir if you will ask me my view or suggestion , I think the [TLA] shipping company should send via FedEx or DHL from Cotonu to Ghana. Then I can get it here. That will be good
Mal wrote back angrily (mixed with sadness).
21 February 0751 AEST/20 February 2151 WAT
Right, I understand. You want to do nothing for yourself. You just want to wait. That's not "being a man." That's being a child, waiting for adults to pick up after you. I wasn't asking you to give suggestions. I was giving you options. I told you why asking for the package to be given to DHL or Fedex was out of the question. You, of course, ignored me. Seems you're not only weak in body, but feeble in mind.

Hmm, the orphan is so lazy.
- If the idiot does not respond positively to your messages (from Malcolm and Akwode), then I think Joojoo could take the initiative to say that he is going to visit some of his relatives in Togo and could bring the package somewhere in Lome. What do you think?
- Even if the scammer does not want to meet with our driver, we can claim that Joojoo opened the package and discovered the money ... he mocks the orphan and says that he will keep everything for him and that he will never return to Benin. Joojoo will stay in Togo and start a new life: rich and happy!

21 February 0915 AEST/20 February 2315 WAT
I want to do something for my self just I am being limited here I cannot do anything without the help of other I'm in refugee here. That is why I need your help to be able to leave Africa and have a better life, I have a dream of becoming a medical doctor.
Sir I will like you to help me claim my late gold from the security company and ship it out. And I know you said I should be patient with you, that you will help me get sponsor that is what I mean I want to wait patiently.
Mal replied at length and with some straight talking.
So you want to be a doctor, huh. Better a doctor than gorram lawyer or politician, because if you'd gone either of those, I'd have chucked you faster than a live grenade, and that ain't no lie. And speaking of gorram lawyers, what the hell happened with your father's barrister? Can't he do something for you? OK, the gold; now here's the thing. You're asking me to accept gold sourced from Sudan. There are issues with that. As I hinted before, Sudan is a place with a bad history as far as the US and the Western world in general. It supported Osama bin Laden, gave him aid and comfort as he planned the murders of three thousand people on September 11 and sparked the War On Terror. He, when all is said and done, is why I was in Iraq. He laid the trail that led to the Bush administration's order to invade. I did my duty as a Marine must, and I still bear the scars, and not all of them are on the outside. TL:DR; gold from Sudan is going to be treated with great suspicion. You won't like to hear that, I know, but I won't lie to you. It's not in my nature, not in the Southern nature. Final note; it's a week or so to the drop-dead date with the package. That doesn't give you long to come up with anything, and I'm out of options.
OK, where to go next... As the PAP deadline approaches, Joojoo or Akwode can open the package to do inventory and find the cash. Knowing that Mal can't complain (or risk getting into trouble), he keeps the money. At a later date he can taunt The Orphan with this.
Mal orders the package returned to cut his losses (maybe he tells Akwode/Joojoo about the money, knowing that it would be found, and a deal is struck that ensures Akwode/Joojoo's silence, which is fine for him, if he'd already found it).
The bait can move ahead with the search for a sponsor (Lenny?), trying to send recompense to Mr Phil (MG, of course), and working through the issues with the gold.

12.48 - Joojoo writes to Phil: Yastreb, Mal found out from Akwode that there was a possibility of an "unofficial delivery" in Lome so he will insist that Phil meet Joojoo in Lome. Of course this is great news and it solves all the problems, right? ... Jesus Christ, Phil can't turn down such an opportunity! After all, there is a so small distance between Accra and Lome and Phil can choose any meeting place he wants.
